After 44 Years, Yehuda Katz Is Finally Home!

After 44 Years, Yehuda Katz Is Finally Home!!!

There are moments when the words Am Yisrael Chai take on a depth that is almost impossible to describe.

This is one of those moments.

After 44 years, the remains of IDF soldier Yehuda Yekutiel Katz, hy”d, have finally been found, identified and brought home to Israel in a special operation led by IDF Military Intelligence together with the Mossad.

Forty-four years.

Think about that.

Yehuda was just 22 years old when he fought in the horrific Battle of Sultan Yacoub during the First Lebanon War on June 11, 1982.

An Israeli armored force advanced into the Bekaa Valley and found itself caught in a deadly battle with Syrian forces. Twenty Israeli soldiers were killed. Dozens were wounded. Tanks were left behind.

And three young Israeli soldiers disappeared: Zachary Baumel, Zvi Feldman and Yehuda Katz.

For decades, their families waited.

For decades, Israel searched.

Zachary Baumel was finally brought home in 2019, after 37 years.

Zvi Feldman was brought home in 2025, after almost 43 years.

And now, Yehuda Katz is finally home as well.

I have friends who served with Yehuda in the IDF and others who studied together with him in yeshiva.

One friend told me how he still remembers saying goodbye to Yehuda when Yehuda was called up for the war and left the yeshiva.

Imagine remembering that goodbye for 44 years.

He left the yeshiva to defend the Jewish people.

And never came home.

Until now.

What other country does this?

What other nation continues working quietly, secretly, using intelligence agents, soldiers and extraordinary undercover operations more than four decades later to find one of its missing soldiers and bring him home?

Governments changed.

Prime ministers came and went.

Wars were fought.

The Soviet Union disappeared.

The entire Middle East changed.

Yet the Jewish people never forgot Yehuda Katz.

The IDF says his return was made possible by intelligence efforts that continued for more than four decades.

And there is another dimension to all of this that I cannot stop thinking about.

Look at what Hashem has done in this region.

Hezbollah attacked us.

Syria descended into revolution and war.

The Assad regime that ruled Syria for decades eventually collapsed.

Sunni ISIS terrorist Ahmed al-Sharaa, formerly known as Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, came to power in Damascus.

Israel's security reality across Lebanon and Syria was completely transformed.

And amid all that chaos, new intelligence and operational opportunities emerged.

Was Yehuda's recovery made possible by those enormous geopolitical changes?

We don't yet know. Israel has deliberately not revealed where his remains were located or the operational details of how they were recovered. So I don't want to state as fact what remains unknown.

But it certainly makes me think.

Hashem works in ways we simply cannot understand.

Things happen that appear terrible. Events unfold that make absolutely no sense to us. History moves in directions none of us could possibly predict.

And then sometimes, years, or even decades, later, we are privileged to see just one tiny piece of a much larger picture.

We will never understand everything Hashem does.

But today we can simply say:

Thank You, Hashem.

Thank You that after 44 years, Yehuda is no longer missing.

Thank You to the soldiers, intelligence officers, Mossad agents and countless people whose names we will probably never know who refused to give up looking for him.

And thank You for allowing the Katz family and the entire Jewish people to finally bring Yehuda home and give him a proper Jewish burial here in the Land of Israel.

Tomorrow morning, Yehuda's funeral procession is scheduled to leave the yeshiva at Kerem B'Yavneh before he is laid to rest on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem.

Forty-four years after leaving his yeshiva to defend Am Yisrael, Yehuda Katz is finally coming home.

יהי זכרו ברוך.

May his memory be a blessing.

Am Yisrael Chai!!!
