La historia naval moderna suele atribuir el desarrollo práctico del submarino militar a potencias industriales del siglo XX como Alemania, Reino Unido o Estados Unidos. Sin embargo, décadas antes de la Primera Guerra Mundial, un oficial e ingeniero naval español desarrolló un sistema submarino extraordinariamente avanzado para su época: el submarino Peral.
Isaac Peral y Caballero (1851–1895), oficial de la Armada Española, científico, ingeniero e inventor, diseñó y construyó el primer submarino militar torpedero completamente eléctrico con capacidad táctica real de combate, botado oficialmente el 8 de septiembre de 1888 en el Arsenal de La Carraca, Cádiz.
Modern naval history frequently attributes the practical development of the military submarine to 20th-century industrial powers such as Germany, the United Kingdom, or the United States. However, decades before World War I, a Spanish naval officer and engineer developed an extraordinarily advanced underwater combat platform for its era: the Peral submarine.
Isaac Peral y Caballero (1851–1895), officer of the Spanish Navy, scientist, engineer and inventor, designed and built the first fully electric torpedo-capable military submarine with real tactical combat capability, officially launched on September 8, 1888, at La Carraca Naval Arsenal in Cádiz, Spain.

Isaac Peral nació en Cartagena, Murcia, España, el 1 de junio de 1851. Desde joven destacó en matemáticas, física, navegación y ciencias aplicadas. Ingresó en la Armada Española con apenas 14 años y desarrolló una brillante carrera técnica y militar.
Su experiencia en navegación oceánica y su profundo conocimiento de:

le permitieron comprender un problema estratégico fundamental del siglo XIX:

Isaac Peral was born in Cartagena, Murcia, Spain, on June 1, 1851. From an early age he excelled in mathematics, physics, navigation and applied sciences. He entered the Spanish Navy at only 14 years old and developed an outstanding military and technical career.
His expertise in:

allowed him to identify one of the great strategic vulnerabilities of 19th-century naval warfare:
