Codification is an international and uniform procedure for the designation, classification, description and numbering the items that enter Supply Chains of Defense.
The NATO Codification System (NCS) ensures that one article is known by one and only one denomination and by one and only one NATO Stock Number (NSN).
The NCS is currently used by 28 NATO countries and 30 non-NATO, and the number of users and items is continuously growing.
If defense equipment supplier is considering perhaps why it is important for you to have their products in the catalog NATO.
The easy answer is that you list your items in the catalog NATO by Nato Stcok Number (NSN), you are positioning their products in an online store accessible to more than 60 countries worldwide through its Defense Logistics Organizations .
The NSN is the basis for the supply chain of the armed forces of NATO and all countries participating in the NATO Codification System (NCS). Identification of the material by NSN ensures the availability of a computer / component in the right place at the right time.
Therefore, the NATO Codification System (NCS) is the bridge between the world of the commercial and defense forces deployed around the world.
The key to a successful logistics management is the establishment of a common supply language, not only for existing items in inventory, but to identify possible articles easily resolve supply problems. These items clearly identified can be quickly incorporated into the NCS. The NCS creates a catalog of equipment / components available, similar to most commercial solutions such as Argos, Ikea or B & Q.
Using NATO Master Catalogue of References for Logistics (NMCRL) compiles information from all participating nations and every single item available for all of NATO. The contribution of each country with their manufacturers and reference data is recorded at NSN. Each NSN provides all the information from commercial suppliers for that item including price, part reference, special features, supply units, storage and transport conditions, etc.. This catalog of items in stock is distributed to all deployed forces of NATO defense organizations and countries using the NCS. NMCRL also available with a subscription reduced to commercial providers.
Literally tons of equipment moving through the supply chain defense agencies NCS users every day. Most of these teams have one thing in common, NSN’s, and not just printed on the side of the package, but as a key field in the planning and management of inventory and as part of the asset tracking label.
The NSN is the main reference in the catalog of items available in the claims management systems used by a massive percentage of the Ministries of Defence of the world, and it is the code used by their supply chains to track supplies and inventory control in warehouses.
Coding System of NATO was created by the U.S. in 1953 and since then has been continuously developed until right now at about 16 million (33 million including canceled) of NSN’s and suppliers around 1.8 million ( counting all 2.5 million) registered worldwide.
If you wonder why it is important that your product is listed in the catalog NATO and what is the benefit to its customers, perhaps the question should really be whether a commercial supplier of defense sector can not afford not to be included in one of the largest existing catalogs to access their customers.
