CANINE - TACTICAL COMBAT CASUALTY CARE GUIDELINES K9 by CoTCCC

The Joint Trauma System is pleased to announce the publication of the new Clinical Practice Guidelines: Telemedicine Guidance in the Deployed Setting and the Traumatic Brain Injury and Basic Neurosurgery in the Deployed Environment (replacing the 2017 Neurosurgery and Severe Head Injury CPG).

In addition, the JTS CPG website now links to the updated 2023 Canine-Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC) guidelines on Deployed Medicine.

The CPGs are available on Deployed Medicine and the JTS CPG websites.

Current Canine/K9 Tactical Combat Casualty Care (K9TCCC) Guidelines as of 01 JANUARY 2020. The K9TCCC Guidelines are the standard of care for the modern battlefield for military working dogs (MWD).

The guidelines cover the management of canine battlefield injuries: Care Under Fire (CUF), Tactical Field Care (TFC), Tactical Evacuation Care (TACEVAC). These recommendations are intended to be guidelines only and are not a substitute for clinical judgment.

The Committee on Canine Combat Casualty Care (CoK9CCC) is an affiliate committee of the Defense Committee on Trauma alongside the CoTCCC, CoERCCC, and CoSCCC. The CoK9CCC is a committee of representatives from across the Army. Navy, Air Force and Marines affiliated with the JTS that establishes military working dog clinical practice guidelines for the delivery of canine combat casualty care (K9CCC) on the battlefield. The Joint Trauma System (JTS) is focused on the standard of care for prehospital battlefield medicine. The JTS is a Department of Defense, Center of Excellence for Trauma providing clinical practice guidelines and performance improvement for all levels of military trauma care.

La ubicación para la descompresión con aguja en un K9 es el espacio intercostal 7º - 9º. Tienen 13 costillas (las personas tienen 12). La descompresión con aguja en un ser humano desde un abordaje lateral es la línea axilar media o anterior del espacio intercostal 4º-5º. Los K9 tienen más probabilidades de tener neumotórax a tensión bilateral. VERIFIQUE: una ubicación aproximada es colocar la punta de un dedo en el borde de la escápula, la punta de un dedo en la última costilla, y donde se juntan los pulgares es aproximadamente el lugar correcto.

Debido al mediastino incompleto o fenestrado en K9, el neumotórax a tensión en un lado con frecuencia se vuelve bilateral. Cuando realice la descompresión con aguja en un K9, considere seriamente la descompresión bilateral si no obtiene la mejora que esperaba.

Location for needle decompression on a K9 is the 7th - 9th intercostal space.They have 13 ribs (people have 12). Needle decompression on a human from a lateral approach is the 4th-5th intercostal space mid or anterior axillary line. K9s are more likely to get bilateral tension pneumothorax. VERIFY: one ballpark location is to put a fingertip on the edge of the scapula, a fingertip on the last rib, and where your thumbs meet is about the right location.

Because of the incomplete, or fenestrated mediastinum in K9s, tension pneumothorax on one side frequently becomes bilateral. When performing needle decompression on a K9, highly consider bilateral decompression if you are not getting the improvement you were hoping for.
